Cyber Safety Tips

As technology becomes an integral part of our everyday lives, both at work and at home, Sealy ISD strives to provide its students with the skills necessary to be successful in our 21st Century world. When given the proper tools and opportunities, Sealy ISD believes that each and every student can be successful.   Many of these tools and resources are available online to students, who are exposed to them on a daily basis.  Sealy ISD provides not only the means to access online resources but also stresses cyber safety and awareness to students as they traverse the web.  Internet access provided by the school is filtered as required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act.

The school day, however, is not the only time that many students use the Internet.  Many have access to the world wide web on their phones, at home or at friends’ homes.  While the Internet contains informative and entertaining websites, it can also expose your child to cyber bullying, inappropriate content and possible exploitation.   It is important that you, as parents, take time to speak with your child about Internet safety.  To assist you in opening this vital line of communication, this letter contains resources with tips for talking to your child about Internet safety.

Below are some safety suggestions from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s “A Parent’s Guide to Internet Safety”:

  • Spend time with your children on-line.
  • Keep the computer in a common room in the house, not in your child’s bedroom.
  • Utilize parental controls provided by your service provider and/or blocking software.
  • Always maintain access to your child’s on-line account and randomly check his/her e-mail.
  • Teach your child the responsible use of the resources on-line.

As always, the safety of our students is of utmost importance to Sealy ISD.  Helping our students become responsible cyber citizens must be a collaborative effort between parents and the District.
