Prevent Summer Learning Loss
A Message from the National Summer Learning Association:
To succeed in school and life, children and young adults need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. This is especially true during the summer months.

Many [parents] have a wonderful image of summer as a carefree, happy time when "kids and be kids", and take for granted the prospect of engaging in enriching experiences.

Did you know that all young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer? Studies over the past 100 years show that students lose approximately two months of grade level equivalency in math computation skills over the summer months. Additionally students lose familiarity with academic vocabulary and drop in levels of reading fluency and proficiency when these skills are not practiced.

Please see the activities and resources provided in the Summer Learning folder available on the right hand side of this webpage to keep your learners engaged in growing their thinking skills during our summer break.

Brining a Continuum of Global Education to SISD Classrooms through Partnership with Doctoral Students from Texas Tech University
Sealy ISD is "flattening classrooms" by Going Global through a partnership with a cohort of doctoral students at Texas Tech University. Upon learning of the Superintendent and SISD School Board's vision to "Create engaged students, with a global perspective on opportunity, fully prepared to reach their highest ambitions", a member of the Texas Tech doctoral cohort contacted SISD to extend their group's expertise and resources. The efforts of the Texas Tech team and the SISD teacher volunteers will assist in both broadening SISD students' horizons through an influx of information and potentially expand opportunities for SISD students to collaborate with students across the globe to share data, feedback, and work in conjunction on purposefully designed projects in alignment with course content and required knowledge and skills.
Members of the Texas Tech doctoral cohort committed to this partnership include: Terry Sutton (cohort partnership coordinator), Meredith Bell, Elizabeth Klammer, Michele McCurdy, Karen McNallen, Jill Nugent, and Soleil Roper with additional support from the partnership coming from Carolyn Finley and educational consultant with Slumberger.
SISD Team members participating in this opportunity include: Ann White (Prekindergarten), LeaAndrea Lehde (Kindergarten), Tori Junco (2nd Grade), Maria Hernandez (Bilingual, 2nd Grade), Peggy Kusy (3rd Grade), Rachel Zwar (3rd Grade), Colyncia Powell (3rd Grade), Danielle Eschenburg (4th-5th Grades), Crystal Erwin (4th Grade), Jason Luckett (4th Grade), Laura Bond (5th Grade), Stacie Woodruff (5th Grade), Tina Kelly (7th Grade), Juan Perez (HS Spanish), Courtney Avila (HS Spanish), James Osborne (HS World Geography and US History) and Nicole Poenitzsch (Asst. Superintendent).
The work within the partnership that has formed between the doctoral students of Texas Tech and the voluntary team of teachers with SISD has just begun. The final stage will be bringing this work to our students in our classrooms in the way in which the SISD teacher and the Texas Tech Cohort mentor have purposefully designed to enhance student's learning and broaden their perspectives on global education and global opportunities.

For additional information, please see the SISD Curriculum and Instruction website beginning in January 2015 or call Dr. Nicole Poenitzsch at (979) 885-3516 ext. 1111.

The Joy of Being Educated
"It has seemed strange to me that in our endless discussions about education, so little stress is laid on the pleasure of becoming an educated person, the enormous interest it adds to life. To be able to be caught up in a world of thought- that is to be educated." - Edith Hamilton
imageCritical Corollary Questions
1. What do we want students to learn?
2. How will we know if they have learned?
3. What will we do if they have not learned?
4. What will we do it they have learned?
